Name: Kenneth Parker
Canon: Original (Wishteria)
Age: 76
History: Born in 1924, Ken was born to one of the largest and strangest of families: the circus. His father James was the ringmaster and his mother Jezebel (or Jess, as she preferred to be called) was the fortune teller and a natural medium. Everyone in the circus helped to raise Ken and since a number of them were not human, he learned about the supernatural side of the world at a very young age and at first didn't realize that most people had no idea they existed.

As he grew older, James wished for Ken to follow in his footsteps and become ringmaster of the circus. While he was good at it, being ringmaster wasn't something he wanted to do, as he was shy and didn't feel comfortable standing in front of all those people and commanding their attention. He planned for years to figure out how to get out of it until he was sixteen and the Blitz was starting to end. Taking advantage of the chaos, Ken left the circus and joined the army, claiming he was eighteen.

Somehow during his joining, he was made an officer and finished training a year later, joining up with a unit as a lieutenant and was second in command as the major in charge had been killed in a recent battle and the captain had taken command until somebody could replace them. It was then that he met Sergeant Liam McNally who, while much older than him, was willing to keep an eye on him. The two became close friends despite their conflicting personalities and became an almost inseparable team over three years.

Then Liam died. During the Battle of the Falaise Pocket, Liam was shot in the chest, killing him. Ken saw him die and lost it, running out into the fighting in an attempt to die and be with his friend. It didn't succeed and when the Germans were successfully pushed back, Ken found his way back to Liam's body and noticed his ghost for the first time. Even knowing his friend was still around after his untimely demise, Ken became understandably depressed over it and Liam worked hard to pull Ken out of it.

A month after Liam’s death, Ken nearly died and it was because of that near death experience that they kissed each other for the first time and realized that they loved each other, even if it was a bit late. This fact helped pull Ken out of his previous depression and went back to working hard to protect his unit and keeping himself alive for both his and Liam's sake, now with additional help from Liam. The war continued on and Ken almost made it to the end of the war without any more major injuries. A month until the end of the war, April of 1945, Ken was shot in the leg trying to save his unit from being pinned down. This leg injury was severe enough to get him honorably discharged from the military and forced him to walk with a cane for the rest of his life, though Ken would do his best to walk without it.

Because of his actions on the battlefield, Ken was knighted and afterwards returned to the circus with Liam at his side. His parents, who had no idea what had happened to their son, were obviously angry with him and yet glad to see that he came back to them alive. The entire circus and Ken hid this from Liam so that he wouldn’t get involved with the family issues, though there was always a hint of tension between everyone. They both had their own issues integrating back into civilian life and in 1947, Ken was finally convinced to enroll in university and do something with his life that wasn’t the circus life his family dreamed for him.

University was a unique experience for Ken and he made few friends, but he didn’t mind much. Living with roommates was a challenge thanks to Liam staying with him and near the end of his time, he ended up moving out of the dorms and into his own flat so that he wouldn’t have to continue dealing with both Liam and his roommates. He ended up getting a business degree, not really knowing what he wanted to do with his life and deciding to figure it out as he went along. With Liam’s help, Ken would start up a few businesses and hand them over to people he thought would help the company succeed without it being at the expense of others, never really seeing the need to stick to one company and grow under his oversight.

He eventually settled into a routine that would be unchanged for around twenty years. In March of 1968, Liam returned home in the early hours with a baby. Liam had been asked for help in a murder case by questioning the deceased and instead of finding relevant information, found the victims’ baby daughter instead, promising to take care of her for them. Ken couldn’t say no and using his contacts, he was able to get a few strings pulled so he could adopt baby Joell and raise her together with Liam.

Raising a daughter was difficult, especially since one of them was dead, but everything turned out fine in the end, barring a bit of teenage rebellion where Joell dated a German boy just to anger her dads. She gained her doctorate in archaeology and Ken was rather pleased with her decision to explore the myths of the world, even when Liam was very skeptical of the whole idea of it. When she left to travel the world after graduating, she left behind her boyfriend Derek to see how a long distance relationship would work, which gave Ken and Liam a sort of unofficial son-in-law because of it.

In 2000, Ken got the surprise of his life when Liam founded a company for his birthday and their anniversary, among other things, that was called Wishteria. It focused on granting the wishes of people with enough money to pay for their services (namely, millionaires and such), with all proceeds going to charity. He and Liam hired an eclectic group of people to assist them with the company and with Derek thought of as the one in charge, Ken decided to use the company as an excuse to relax and think of it as his retirement. There was only one bit of trouble and that was with the AI Tanya, who was a gift to Ken from Liam and became sentient, taking over Liam’s job of managing the books and earning the ghost’s dislike once he found out, forcing Ken to have to intervene and stop Liam from sulking like a child.

Point in canon: 4 June, 2000, six months after the founding of Wishteria

Window Location: Basement of the Wishteria HQ Building

Universe: More or less our own world of 2000. Some things are anachronistic (such as the presence of fully functional AI programs being purchasable as a gag gift along with some telecommunications and other small advances), and some things are incredibly fantastic (such as the existence of ghosts, goblins, vampires, werewolves, mediums, unicorns, and all the rest of the fantasy farm). For the most part, these mythical creatures manage to stay underneath the radar of regular folk, most of them keeping their culture and business away from the rest of the world, but their occasional presence in society throughout history makes it somewhat easier for inhabitants of this Earth to accept the existence of the magical side of things.

Abilities: On the powers side of things, Ken is an untrained medium, a person able to communicate with both the living and nonliving. He is also completely unaware of this fact. What he can do compared to a trained medium is laughable. He cannot reliably see ghosts (he's normally only see them as shadows out of the corners of his eyes), he is unable to send spirits to the afterlife, and he cannot interact with them physically. All he is able to do is to sense and pinpoint a ghost's presence in a room.

There is one exception to Ken's complete lack of medium abilities: Liam McNally. Due to how close the two were before Liam's death, Ken is able to use his medium powers to their fullest when it comes to him. He is able to see Liam even when the other doesn't wish it and can physically interact with him in a limited fashion.

Outside of powers, Ken is a very intelligent man with it comes with running a business and is very knowledgeable on the subject of mythical beings. He also knows about the inner workings of the circus and can be a passable ringmaster if the situation calls for it (why would the situation call for it?). During his late teenage years, he joined the army and was trained to be an officer, teaching him how to be an effective leader. He's also been trained to use both a gun and a whip and could possibly fend off an attack by bashing someone in the head with his cane.

Possessions: The clothes he's wearing, his cane, and a pack of cigarettes.

Personality: Ken at first glance can be easily described as incredibly stable. Upon slightly closer inspection it's quite obvious that this isn't exactly the right description and stable is instead actually detached. He seems apathetic to the people around him, not exactly pushing them away, but making himself look unapproachable and uncaring towards others. This makes it difficult for people to get close to Ken and he tends to act as if he doesn't want new people to do so. When dealing with people in the workplace, he tends to thaw out a lot, acting more like a shy if slightly distant man than the apathetic and detached man that’s usually seen. Whether this is him being closer to his coworkers and employees than random people or just his attempt to not alienate the people he has to deal with is something only he knows (and it’s a bit of both, actually).

The distance and apathy Ken has towards people is just a mask he's built up over the years, starting when he was first training to take his father's place as ringmaster of the circus and continuing on from there. A naturally shy person to begin with, Ken shut himself off when offstage as his persona onstage was open and meant to get people to focus on him, as that was the main point of a ringmaster. This changed for the worse after the war and what was just large amounts of shyness turned more into a wall he's placed between himself and the world around him, only allowing a select few to get close. It's a defense mechanism to keep himself from being hurt again like he had been during the war and it's worked wonders.

Behind his mask, he’s a caring and gentle individual. It's very hard to move him to anger unless it involves threats to his family and even then, he tries to stay cool and rational about it. Not surprisingly, he tends to be very serious when it comes to most things and on topics that he cares greatly about, he becomes very passionate about them. For the most part though, he tends to come off as a bit eccentric and old fashioned in his ways. Well, as old fashioned as a man who was raised in a circus and ended up in a relationship with a male ghost can be. Ken is a bit of a secret romantic, which is obvious when he’s around Liam. He’s still not one to talk much even when he’s not hiding behind his defenses, but when he does, it’s normally straight to the point and never without reason. His sense of humor can switch between dry sarcasm to horribly inappropriate to innuendo depending on the circumstances, changing between them to maximize the shock value from people who don't know him.

It’s not all sunshine with Ken though. He’s very possessive of people, especially of Liam and his daughter, though it was mostly hidden due to the fact that Liam is dead and it comes off as protectiveness towards his daughter. This doesn't make Ken stop the people he's possessive of from talking to others, instead him not wanting other people to get too close to his family. Combine this with a large dose of paranoia and it makes Ken very difficult to be around sometimes. Because of his participation in War World II, he has post-traumatic stress disorder and thanks to his distance away from most people, it’s not really noticeable unless you're looking for it. He has trouble in stressful situations because of it and when he's able to, he drinks and is a functioning alcoholic. Ken can also be very stubborn about things, especially if they happen to be damaging to his ego and is willing to hurt himself if it keeps his ego intact.

Thread Sample: thread on [community profile] dear_mun and a post from a previous game (where he was given a younger body, but from the same canon point)
Prose Sample: There were at least fifteen points of entry into the main building and Ken was patrolling to make sure they were all locked. It was an old habit, one that he had never been able to shake from his time still in the military and one that he actually somewhat enjoyed. Doing this also gave him an excuse to poke around and see how everyone is doing without it looking like he's doing so. He worried about them sometimes and liked to make sure they weren't pushing themselves. Ken knew from experience how that can end.

It was quiet this late at night, most people having left or gone to bed, leaving Ken with the hallways mostly to himself. That was yet another thing he liked, especially since he had decided to be a stubborn idiot and walk around the large building without his cane. He hated how he had to depend on it and did his best to not use it whenever possible. Hopefully, Liam hadn't noticed or he'd never hear the end of it.

About halfway through checking the doors on the south side of the building, he noticed something odd. Well, it was odd for the moment, not so much odd in general. Resting against the wall of the hallway Ken was currently in was his cane. There was no sign of anybody else nearby who could have left it here for him except for the slight feeling of being watched that he associated with Liam being nearby but hidden.

"Liam," he said softly, his voice tinged with annoyance. Taking a good look at the cane for a moment, Ken then walked past it without a glance back, ignoring it as he continued on his way. "Obnoxious bastard, thinking I need to have that stick with me to walk."

The cane popped up a few more times on his patrol, each time Ken ignoring it with ease, possibly to the annoyance of his husband, but Ken didn't seem to care. His leg ached the further he walked and yet he still ignored it as it periodically appeared along his path. Stopping for a moment, he leaned against a wall to rest his leg before he continued on. Sadly, he didn't get much of a break before he saw someone moving quickly down the hall.

"Sir Ken!" Oh great, it was Derek. Ken sighed as the young man came up to him, a bundle of energy even that late in the evening. "I've found some things that I think you should take a look at."

"If it's not something that immediately needs my attention, Mr. Parker, than it will have to wait until tomorrow. Office hours ended for me quite a while ago." His leg was starting to feel worse and Liam, being the sneaky bastard that he was, had hidden his cane when Derek arrived. This was probably revenge for him having walked around without it. "But before you do decide to run off to do whatever it is you do to amuse yourself after hours, I would like to run something by you."

"Really? What exactly were you thinking?" There was almost an eager expression of Derek's face and Ken had to keep himself from laughing. It was almost kind of sad to see how hard he tried to make sure that his girlfriend's parents liked him since Ken and Liam didn't really have a problem with the kid. Not that Ken would ever let him know.

"You know that I am interested in the security of the building and since Cassandra is busy, I was hoping that you would assist me in finding out if all exits in the building are covered properly." It was moments like that one that made Ken glad that he had an impressive poker face that kept him from outright giggling and instead made him look very serious when he spoke.

"That sounds easy enough," Derek replied, looking thoughtful for a moment. "What will I have to do?"

"Oh, nothing that you can't handle." He waved his hand for dramatic effect as he paused. "You would only need to climb the building to see if anyone can get through the door on the roof."

"That's it?"

"That's it."

Derek smiled and clapped Ken on the shoulder, making him wince slightly. "I can do that for you no problem, Sir Ken. I'll set everything up and I can try it tomorrow!"

Not giving Ken the chance to respond, Derek bolted off down the hall, leaving the older man alone. At least appearing to be alone until someone started laughing somewhere off to the left of Ken. There was a soft sigh from Ken and he rolled his eyes in annoyance.

"You might be dead, but I can still hear you laughing, Liam." He didn't even look to see if his husband decided to become visible for him, continuing to talk. "Thought you had better things to do than follow me around and leave my cane around the place."

"I wouldn't do it if you used it like you're supposed to." There was a huff of annoyance from Liam and Ken did his best to ignore it. "You don't need to be a stubborn ass with me."

"Not being stubborn. Didn't need to use it yet." He paused as he thought as to how he was going to word this. "Need it now though. So give me the damn cane, you incorporeal bastard."

Taking it out from wherever Liam kept such things (behind his back, most likely), he held it out for Ken to snatch up angrily, doing his best not to look at the ghost. "Come on, Liam," he grumbled as he leaned on his cane and started to head back to their rooms, ignoring the smug satisfaction and whistling Liam is doing in response to successfully having Ken give in.

Name: Macha
Sex: Female
Form: Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus)
Additional notes: n/a
Why this form: I would have chosen a rock for him, but daemons have to be animals so I went with my backup choice.

While a bird daemon might not be an obvious choice due to his crippling leg injury, it's actually quite fitting for him in general. Birds can be used symbolize freedom, something Ken has tried to find for most of his childhood and teenage years and eventually succeeded in finding and keeping in his adult life. There is also the fact that in some cultures, a bird can be thought of as a link between the heavens and the earth, similar to Ken's own nature of a medium, no matter that he is unaware of it. More specific to falcons, they be used to represent protective guardians, which is something Ken tends to be towards anyone he's close to, even if he leans more towards possessive than protective.

On why a common kestrel, this essay helped with my choice, namely for the fact that it is eerily close to Ken's personality and represents who is he is far better than I can describe here, covering his emotional distance from the majority of people to his determination to get through everything life throws at him, as well as his hidden closeness towards the few people he's allowed to get in past his stoic, distant front.
